Larry Ward
Lawrence Anderson Ward was born on October 2, 1944 in San Luis Obispo, CA. He had a sister, Ellen.
As a child Ward had a natural affinity towards languages, his mother brought him to a local carpet/rug store to learn Greek from the owner, the Oakland Tribune even had a couple of articles written about Ward's ability.
Ward attended Piedmont High School in East Bay, San Francisco, CA where he graduated in 1962, he then attended U.C. Berkeley where he studied linguistics. After college he joined the U.S. Navy where he was sent to Vietnam.
Ward was a fluent in Arabic, languages of Native American people as well as those of the Indian Subcontinent (Southern India), Spanish, and Russian. He was familiar with Swahili and Greek.

Ward was an expert linguist hired by Ben Burtt to work on alien dialogue for Star Wars. Burtt had a recording of a dead Incan language (a defunct part of the Quechuan family of languages) and Ward jumbled words together to sound as if they meant something. Ward and Burtt also collaborated on the Huttese language.
Ward died on October 15, 2007 in Stockton, CA. after ill-effects of a serious fall. He was survived by his sister, Ellen.
