Declan Mulholland
Thomas Declan Mulholland was born on December 6, 1932 in the Falls Road area of Belfast, Northern Ireland, UK. He was one of five children.
As a child Mulholland and his family lived in such poverty that they could not afford to pay the school fees, but the headmaster (aware of how bright Declan was) allowed the child to stay in school until the debt could be paid by his parents. By the age of 15 he left school to work in the shipyards of Belfast.
Mulholland was a carpenter by trade and had no history of acting on the Irish stage, by the 1950s he'd made his way to London as a delegate for a peace movement conference and joined the Young Communist League. With his carpentry skills in tow he made his way during the work boom. In the late 1950s Mulholland had joined the Somers Town Theatre Group at the socially aware Unity Theatre in Camden, where he designed sets, trained in acting, and took small parts in plays staged there. His interest in acting was encouraged by friend and theatre director Joan Littlewood, instead what he did was find carpentry work at Pinewood Studios building and dismantling film sets.
However, in 1962 Mulholland found himself auditioning for and earning the part of Morrison in the film "HMS Defiant". During lean acting times he was able to rely upon carpentry as a backup.

By the 1970s he had moved away from the Communist Party and into the Anarchist Movement.
Mulholland's will stated that all residuals from his films/appearances would be put into the Declan Mulholland Trust (helping young actors train). Each year a benefit is held, An Evening’s Entertainment: Declan’s Big Gala Night, Camden (North London), UK, to add to the bursary.
Mulholland resided in Primrose Hill, Fitzroy Road, Camden, until his sudden death (from a brain tumor/heart attack) on June 29, 1999. He was survived by one sister, Vera. He is buried at Golders Green, London.

Declan Mulholland Trust was set up in Mulholland's honor. From BritishTheatreGuide.info: As a legacy to encouraging a new generation of actors, he left the residuals that come in from his work to help students financially while they train. The money goes to the Declan Mulholland Trust, set up for this purpose. The Trust then makes one or more scholarships available (depending on the amount of money raised) to deserving trainees.
