Henderson, Don

Don Henderson

Don Francis Henderson was born 10 November 1932 in Leytonstone, London, England. He was brought up in Epping, Essex in a working-class area. He spent nearly 20 years of his working life as an Army dental technician, a CID officer with Exxex police, and a salesman.

In 1966, on a dare from a friend, he auditioned for the Royal Shakespeare Company...and was accepted. He stayed for six years (1966-1972)playing nearly all of Shakespeare's characters.
At that point Henderson became a professional actor (he was in his 30s), and did a wide variety of work from radio, narration, film, and theater.  He enjoyed working with his wife, Shirley Stelfox, whenever he could (many will remember Stelfox from her role as Rose on 'Keeping up Appearances'). He was a patron for the LAB/LBC London Radio Playwright's Festival at its start in 1990 and he wrote script reports.

Henderson died of throat cancer on June 22, 1997.  He was survived by his wife, actress Shirley Stelfox (who died in 2015 of cancer) (Thanks to Mark from Lightsabre.co.uk for this info!), a son Ian, a daughter Louise, a step-daughter Helena, and a grandson Mathew.
