Nicole Galland grew up in West Tisland, Vineyard Island, Massachusetts. Her parents are Michael Colaneri and Karen Goethals Colaneri.

Galland was always interested in performing and writing but only started to study acting when she was fourteen. She's a Harvard University graduate (1987) who got her degree in Comparative Religion but spent a good portion of her time in the theatre. After college, she set off for Japan where she delved into Buddhism near Kyoto, where, for a short period, she was going to make a start as a Buddhist nun.  That did not happen, instead, Galland returned to the United States, to northern California, where she co-founded a teen theatre company which made its debut at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland.

It was also during this time that Galland received a full fellowship at UC Berkeley to get her Ph.D. (1993) in Drama. Though she did not finish her doctorate she did move on to work in theatre, writing and editing moving between New York City, the Bay Area, and Los Angeles.

Galland now works as a full-time writer and has published her first novel, A Fool's Tale: A Novel of Medieval Wales and is currently writing the second and third novels of this story.
