Art Carney
Art Carney (born Arthur William Matthew Carney) was born on November 3, 1918 and was the youngest of six sons (on of which is Fred Carney actor/director) born in Mount Vernon, NY to an insurance salesman and his musician wife. A born mimic, he began his career as a singer and comic with the Horace Heidt Orchestra in the 1930s and went on to become a regular on Heidt's radio program in the 40s, partnered with Ollie O'Toole or playing straight man to Fred Allen and Edgar Bergen. Carney served in the US Army during WWII and was struck by shrapnel during the landing at Omaha Beach in Normandy. The resulting leg wound left the actor with a slight limp. After the war, he landed his first regular role in television on "The Morey Amsterdam Show"
Carney has been married three times (twice to the same woman): Barbara Isaac ('66-'77), Jean Myers ('40-'66) and sometime previous to 1966 to Jean Myers with whom he had three children, one of which is the actress Barbara (Ellen) Carney, another is actor Brian Carney, the third Paul.
Carney was retired since the early 90's (but has done a few rare appearances), he lived at his home in Westchester County, New York until his death in Westbrook, Connecticut.
Carney died on November 9, 2003.
