Burroughs, Jackie

Jackie Burroughs

Jackie Burroughs was born on February 2, 1939 in Lancashire, England, UK.  Jackie and her family lived in England until she was 12, but moved to Toronto, Canada in 1952.  In Canada she attended Branksome Hall, a private girls school, where she was the head girl.  She then attended the University of Toronto (graduated 1962).

Jackie began acting by accident just after graduating in 1962.  The following year, 1963, her neighbor gave her a role in a TV show, Twelve and a Half Cents, and that gig ended up being the catapult into her acting career, including The Stratford Festival doing Shakespeare.

In the 60s she and her husband, Zal Yanovsky (a founding member of The Lovin' Spoonful), moved to New York City, where she and Zal had a daughter, Zoé.  By 1968 the marriage had ended, and Burroughs moved back to Canada, where Zoé was being raised by her father in Kingston, Ontario, CAN. where he owned a restaurant, and Burroughs was working on numerous Stratford and Shaw festival plays.

Burroughs divided her time between a home in Oaxaca, Mexico ('The house that Sullivan built' she says, referring to the creator of the Avonlea series) and an apartment in Toronto. Her hobbies included Tai Chi, reading novels, studying Spanish and dancing lessons.

Jackie Burroughs died from stomach cancer on September 22, 2010 in Toronto, Ontario, CAN.
