Tom Baker
Tom Baker (né Thomas Stewart Baker) was born on January 20, 1934 to John Stewart Baker and Mary Jane (née Fleming) in Liverpool, England, UK. He had two younger siblings, Lulu (Louise) and John.
Baker attended St. Swinton's School, then in 1946, attended St. Matthew's School in Walton, and a Christian brother came to speak to the students, Baker was impressed. He decided to become a monk and joined the monastic order of the Brothers of Ploërmel when he was 15 years old in 1949. Baker lived and studied as an apprentice monk for nearly 6 years at the monasteries on the island Jersey and in Shropshire.
Baker left the monastery (something he said that he was worried to tell his mother) in 1952 after being conscripted into National Service in the Royal Army Medical Corps as an orderly, where he served on the Queen Mary for seven months in the Merchant Navy and was stationed in Germany. It was in Germany that he became interested in acting (a Christmas pageant production), and disinterested in religion and his faith.
Baker earned a scholarship to attended the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama in Sidcup (Greater London), England, where he was classmates (and flatmates) with SWAD alum Malcolm Tierney.
After college he worked in repertory theatre, then with the National Theatre in 1968, where he had a contract until 1971.
At the time he was cast as The Doctor (Doctor Who) he had been working as a general labourer at building sites, doing work which included drilling, and a bricklayer/hod carrier. He was rather desperate to return to acting full time so put out a letter to Bill Slater (whom Baker had worked with on The Millionairess and was just entering Head of Drama Serials at the BBC) asking if there was any work to be had. There was, he was cast as The Fourth Doctor in Doctor Who.
Baker has been married three times: First to Anna Wheatcroft (they had two children, Daniel and Piers), then to Lalla Ward, and finally to Sue Jerrard Baker.
